I like the old-school 32x pack. Basically default but cleaner. My computer also doesn't sound like it's preparing for takeoff.
16x forever. If I wanted every piece of dirt to have fourteen different shades I'd go outside.
I downloaded one that made grass extremely green. Like radioactive green. My eyes were tired after five minutes.

I still have a texture pack from 2010 where the furnace is just a darker furnace. No fancy shading. Perfect.
